Energy efficient stove

Meeting the needs of climate change and deforestation, the uni volunteers iniated and created an energy efficient stove for the new school. In Uganda most stoves are fueled with wood or charcoal, continuing to deplete the natural resources. In some places people travel all day to find some wood or pay an exorbant fee for charcoal. This stove is an innovative, simple to use, simple to make and easily replicated technology designed for maximum fuel efficiency, lessening the pressure on forests and producing less green house gases.

Working together

Working together to create sustainable food for the community of Uganda, volunteers from the environmental management course at Makerere university, partner with primary aged children to give these kids lunch. It is not hard to inspire the children to be involved, they know that through this work they will grow food for themseleves, and end those hunger pains. One time when I was in Uganda I asked the teacher for only a few volunteers, I selected about 5 students to come and assist in building a nursery. Before long the entire grades 6 and 7 were out helping, The teachers explained that the children really wanted to come out and help, to be a part of creating a future without hunger. They wanted to help so much- the teachers found it no use trying to stop them!!! it was an absolute pleasure :)

Nyeihanga school

A new whellbarrow load of tools has been delivered with several volunteer trainers to Nyeihanga school, Uganda. In just one week this new school has created vegetable gardens, learnt how to make their own organic fertilisers and natural pest control. What an amazing group of people.

The first crop of sweet potatoes!

The first time these awesome young permaculturalists get a fresh healthy lunch at school. The teachers were so grateful as now the students have an opportunity to learn- their concentration level without food was a real barrier to the kids getting a good education starving rather than studying so to speak. No longer! These students have now graduated and will be the teachers in the next school, sharing what they have learnt and nurturing each other with a gentle culture of giving.
Within 2 months lunch was getting closer and closer! These beautiful students do not have any food or water for their entire school day which is from 7am-5pm six days a week. Often starting the day with no breakfast as well. For me it was a huge privilege to give the gift of seeds, tools and some training which empowers these kids to end their own hunger and that of every following child.
